ECCW brings act to Abby

Scotty Mac with a headlock on Abbotsford's own, Mikey D.Men and women daredevils flying through the air in costumes may seem like a scene from a comic book, but in the world of Extreme Canadian Championship Wrestling - it is just another night.

The well-travelled entertainment wrestling company is coming to the Abbey Arts Centre (2329 Crescent Way) on Saturday to provide some high-flying antics for wrestling enthusiasts and families.

The ECCW has been putting on the shows for around 13 years, says “The Champ” Scotty Mac, and Abbotsford is always a key destination for the company.

“We try to go there a few times a year,” said Mac, adding the ECCW also caters to the youthful Abbotsford crowd.

“We try and keep our Abbotsford shows a little more family friendly . . . we have a few more kids that come out in Abbotsford,” he said.

So don’t expect blood or battering, just excitement and a healthy mix of good and bad guys.

“It’s a place where a lot of wrestlers can start their careers and it is also where a lot of older wrestlers finish up,” said Mac. “There are some of us that do desire success in the big time.”

Mac and a couple of the other performers have taken part at a World Wrestling Entertainment event last year. As well as veteran and rookie ring performers, the ECCW also has a lot of local talent. The three regular performers from Abbotsford are Mikey D, Dastardly Danni Deeds and Todd Quality.

“The Abbotsford guys are always in the Abbotsford shows and people always get behind them so it’s great to see,” said Mac.

While they may wear outfits and pull off personas in the ring, the ECCW is big on heart.

Alyssa Sargeant, who does work with Abbotsford Special Adventures, a group that sends people with physical and mental disabilities to camp, says the ECCW wrestlers have gone out of their way to help out.

“[Scotty Mac] brought about 30 of the guys out and put on a three-hour show for us - for free.”

Along with that, the company has autograph signings for the group and free tickets to the events. The ECCW also helps to fund the camp trips.

So if you want to see flips, slams and some crazy characters, check out Saturday’s show. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $15 for front row tickets and can be bought at the door or online at www.eccw.com.

The doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the matches start at 8 p.m.
